The Sierra Nevada is a massive wilderness area spanning some 400 miles of Eastern California. Within this mountainous region are over 24,000 square miles of land to be explored. Highlights of the area include the looming 14,515-foot Mount Whitney, the serene Lake Tahoe with its turquoise-blue waters, and three different national parks (Sequoia, Yosemite, and Kings Canyon).
In the summer months, a slew of hikers embarks on Mount Whitney, the tallest peak in the contiguous United States. Others tackle hundreds of other miles of trails winding over mountain passes and through lush canyons. Autumn ushers in a swath of yellow, gold, orange, and crimson as the leaves of the aspens, cottonwoods, and willows. Over the winter months, the Sierra’s elevation lends itself to great skiing at several Lake Tahoe resorts, including Heavenly and Diamond Peak. With spring comes the slush of snow melt along with the blossoming of new flora and fauna. No matter what time of year you visit, there is always lots to do and plenty of breathtaking scenery to take in, in the beautiful Sierra Nevada.
